California has the largest population of any state in the union. There is also a large number of counseling psychology schools in California, though most do not have the doctoral program required for licensure. The job outlook for counselors in California is bright, both due to population growth and an aging population which requires more mental health services.
The pay rate for psychologists is between $80,000 and $85,000 a year, well above the national average. This is in part due to the strict licensing requirements; you must have both a doctoral degree in psychology and pass the licensing exam held by the California Board of Psychology. It is also partially due to a greater acceptance of counseling, leading to greater usage of mental health services by the population than is seen elsewhere in the country.
