Students who finish a graduate program in counseling psychology must take the exam administered by the Alabama Board of Examiners in Psychology. Those who pass the exam can expect to make between $35,000 and $40,000 a year to start, after they’ve completed a one year of supervised counseling. The largest employers of psychologists are hospitals, health networks and private practices.
Alabama A&M University
Alabama A&M University has a counseling psychology program, in addition to clinical and rehabilitation psychology programs. Alabama A&M is one of the CACREP accredited schools that meet the standards necessary for students to be licensed as a professional counselor in the state of Alabama. Admission requirements include a cumulative unweighted grade point average (GPA) of a 2.0 and an American College Test (ACT) score of at least a 18. Applicants with Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) will require a score of at least 1290.
Alabama State University
Auburn University has an undergraduate, graduate and doctoral program in counseling psychology. The American Psychiatric Association has accredited the PhD department at Auburn University in Auburn, Alabama. Auburn University offers degrees in special education, rehabilitation, counseling psychology, school counseling and clinical psychology.
Troy University has a counseling psychology program. It has both an undergraduate and graduate program in counseling psychology, though its educational specialist community counseling program is not certified. It also has specialized courses for those who want to focus on substance abuse counseling and corrections counseling.
The University of North Alabama
The University of North Alabama has a counseling psychology program. It also offers a doctorate in clinical and counseling psychology. The University has a program for school counseling as well.
University of Alabama
For those who want to enroll in a graduate clinical psychology program, the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa and the Birmingham campus programs rated among the best in the country by U.S. News and World Reports in 2012. It tied for sixtieth in the nation, out of hundreds of schools.
