Psychiatry Schools in Hawaii

Psychiatry is the medical treatment and study of psyche. Psychiatry professionals treat patients with problems of anxiety, schizophrenia and other mental disorders. Students who are pursuing a psychiatry profession are required to complete an undergraduate psychology/psychiatry program at an accredited educational institution. A psychiatry student is required to complete a graduate program such as, a master’s degree. Psychiatrist careers begins in medical school. Each student must successful finish a four (4) year residency training program in a medical health facility.

Residents of Hawaii and out of state students can begin a successful career by attending an accredited school. There are five known accredited psychiatry schools in Hawaii including the following:

  • University of Hawaii
  • Argosy University
  • Hawaii Pacific University
  • Brigham Young University
  • Chaminade University of Honolulu

The schools that offer bachelor programs are the University of Hawaii, Chaminade University of Honolulu, Brigham Young University and Hawaii Pacific. Argosy University offers a certificate and doctorate program.

Course Requirements

The certificate, bachelor, master and doctorate programs have different course requirements. The courses required for a bachelor program are biology, biochemistry, physics, zoology, English, math, laboratory and inorganic & organic chemistry. The master degree program requires students to complete courses such as, microbiology, neuroscience, pathophysiology, histology, immunology, pathology, molecular biology, pharmacology, anatomy, physiology and morphology. After completion of a graduate program, the residency medical training requirements includes psychopharmacology, neurology, mental evaluation, family medicine, community psychiatry, suicidal behavior, forensic psychiatry and psychotherapy & empathy.

There were only one hundred and ninety psychiatrists employed in the state of Hawaii according to the U.S. Dept. of Labor Statistics report, May 2012. The average mean wage annually is approximately $120,000. Psychiatrists are required to attain State Board Certification to practice psyche medicine in Hawaii. Licensed Psychiatrists work in medical hospitals, colleges, universities, psychiatric & substance abuse hospitals, care centers and practice independently. Some of the top paying companies and industries that hire psychiatrists are psychiatric & substance abuse hospitals, outpatient care centers, physicians’ offices and mental health facilities.
